Silence Trailer: We Are Ready For Scorsese’s Next

First Trailer for Martin Scorsese’s Silence Has Us Smiling Loudly

Finally.

New Martin Scorsese films are typically treated as big deals because they most certainly are big effing deals. He’s been one of our most acclaimed directors for nearly four decades, and as evident by 2013’s The Wolf of Wall Street he’s in no danger of losing energy, wit, or determination any time soon.

His eagerly awaited new film, Silence, is due in theaters in January – with a brief qualifying run in December – but until now has been lacking in even the briefest of teasers. That changes now. Check out the trailer below and get excited to experience the film on the big screen in a little more than a month.

Yes please.

Andrew Garfield and Adam Driver play Jesuit priests who head to 17th century Japan with two goals – they want to find the mentor (Liam Neeson) who preceded them, and they want to spread the word of Jesus Christ by converting the Japanese away from their own religious beliefs. It appears they meet some understandable resistance in their efforts.

You’d almost believe this was a Mel Gibson-directed film judging by the abuse the pair look to be enduring.

Shûsaku Endô’s novel is the basis for the film and was previously adapted for the screen in 1971. Scorsese’s version is written by Jay Cocks who previously worked with the director on The Age of Innocence and Gangs of New York, and he also wrote Kathryn Bigelow’s Strange Days.

The film looks like a visual stunner thanks in part to cinematographer Rodrigo Prieto (Argo, The Wolf of Wall Street), but the trailer’s music is equally stunning. It’s unclear if it’s part of the score by Kathryn Kluge & Kim Allen Kluge, but we’ll find out soon enough.
