Is there more to the comedy than its ball puns?

Dodgeball holds a special place in many people’s hearts as a crass, lovable, ultimately heartwarming comedy that played every single waking hour on Comedy Central while many of us were in high school or college. But it’s also much smarter than meets the eye. At least, that’s what one video argues.

Trash Theory’s free-wheeling, often personal video essay makes the case that Vince Vaughn and crew aren’t just an underdog story, they’re a redefinition of masculinity in an industry and genre filled to the brim with toxicity.

Undermining hyper-masculine tropes through bro-ish humor may seem contradictory, but when done effectively, that’s called subversion. The video makes a decent case for the latter, adding depth and progressive heft to a movie many of us may call a guilty pleasure.
