Shot by Shot with the ‘Ad Astra’ Trailer

James Gray's latest aims to provide a realistic portrayal of space travel.

Cut to some scenes depicting a spaceship. Roy then spills the beans to his colleague/interrogator about the Lima Project. As it turns out, it was a mission tasked with discovering extraterrestrial life in outer space. Unfortunately, though, the ship disappeared 16 years into the mission.

The commander of that mission also happened to be Roy’s father — and he might not have been so heroic after all.

It turns out that Roy’s old man was experimenting with a highly classified material that could threaten the existence of the entire solar system. Perhaps it’s safe to assume that he was responsible for the Surge too?

Furthermore, all life — including beautiful planets like the one shown in the above shot — will be destroyed unless Roy fixes things. The universe is counting on him to find out what’s happening out there. No pressure then, eh?
