Why Watch? Clearly a sequel to Jiro Dreams of Sushi, this ingenious proof of concept short from Dan Blank features an ancient promise broken, giant sea creatures exacting revenge and brave sushi chefs taking the big knife to them in order to save mankind. It’s construction is flawless, using well-timed editing and great visuals to deliver the first act of what they hope will be a feature film to come. Plus, the massive CGI monsters are thoroughly impressive.
Beyond the crazy concept and execution lies a great new take on the Japanese monster movie. Where Godzilla represented a nuclear reality, Monster Roll pivots off the over-fishing problem currently burdening the island country. It’s a creature feature that retains its social context, which is commendable. It’s also commendable that the short is hugely ridiculous fun even without soy sauce on it.
They’re starting a Kickstarter page soon, and you can track it, but it seems inevitable that the finished feature will be playing at Fantastic Fest as soon as its done. They definitely proved their concept.
