Sequel Trailers Win the Day, Fargo Season 3 Adds Another, David Lynch Eats a Donut, and the #2016Rewind Begins

The day’s big headlines in bite-size portions.

This week started off with a bang thanks to a pair of explosive trailers for hotly-anticipated 2017 films, Blade Runner 2049 from Denis Villeneuve, starring Ryan Gosling and Harrison Ford, and John Wick Chapter 2, which stars Keanu Reeves. I had some quick thoughts on both, so click the link for those as well as the trailers.

The third season of Noah Hawley’s FX drama Fargo added another top-shelf actor this week in David Thewlis, best-known for his roles in Mike Leigh’s Naked and as Remus Lupin in the Harry Potter franchise. Thewlis will be playing V.M. Vargas, “a mysterious loner and true capitalist who delivers Emmit (Ewan McGregor), the Parking Lot King of Minnesota, the bad news that he has just become partners with his employers, whose business interests lay outside the law.” EW scooped the specifics.

McGregor is top-billed here and will be playing a set of twin brothers, Emmit and Ray Stussy, the former of whom is described as “a handsome, self-made, real estate mogul and family man who sees himself as an American success story,” while Ray “is a cautionary tale – balding and pot-bellied, Ray peaked in high school and is now a parole officer.”

Thewlis will join a supporting cast that already includes Mary Elizabeth Winstead (10 Cloverfield Lane) as a bridge-playing parolee, and Carrie Coon (The Leftovers, Gone Girl) as a freshly-divorced Chief of Police. The story is said to take place in 2010, which places it a few years after season one and 30+ after season two. No previous cast members are set to return, but that doesn’t mean there won’t be some kind of connection to the people/events of earlier seasons: one and two were connected by the character of Lou Solverson, who was portrayed in the first season by Keith Carradine and in the second by Patrick Wilson.

Fargo starts shooting early next year for a later-2017 release.

And lastly today, in case you missed our tweet earlier, there was a new promo released for the third season of Twin Peaks over the weekend, and like everything else we’ve seen or heard about the series, it was very exciting bunch of nothing, detail-wise. That said, this tease is also the coolest yet, as it features David Lynch in character as FBI Deputy Director (formerly Regional Bureau Chief) Gordon Cole eating a donut. That’s it. No dialogue, no music, just a man, his suit, and a glazed treat. If you look close you can even see the hearing aids for which Cole is famous. Funny that in a quarter century he hasn’t updated them, but that’s also perfectly Cole, who was never really a figure created by the present, but the amalgamation of his mysterious, highly-classified past.

Showtime has season three but they’re keeping their lips glued about when (or even how) they’re going to air it. Best bet? April or May 2017. Before that, they’re making all 30 episodes of the first two seasons available on their digital platforms for streaming starting December 26th, and these same episodes hit the network in January. Check out the teaser below; I dare you to not get hungry.
