“Things Were Simpler Then” — Your First Trailer for Blade Runner 2049 Has Arrived

By  · Published on December 19th, 2016

The future looks familiarly bleak.

Anyone who tells you they don’t have Denis Villeneuve’s Blade Runner 2049 near the top of their 2017-most-anticipated list is either a liar, or they haven’t seen this announcement trailer, which appeared out of nowhere and without warning on the internet today. I’m not going to say anything at all up front, just watch…

Holy shit, did Blade Runner just meet Mad Max: Fury Road? Because that is one hella yellow and dusty world Ryan Gosling looks to be walking through. And I don’t know about you, but seeing Harrison Ford come into focus holding that iconic gun gave me the same kind of goosebumps I got when Han and Chewie entered the Millennium Falcon in The Force Awakens and said, “We’re home.”

Speaking of TFA, the basic plot for Blade Runner 2049 was also released today, and it sounds kind of familiar, structurally:

Thirty years after the events of the first film, a new blade runner, LAPD Officer K (Ryan Gosling), unearths a long-buried secret that has the potential to plunge what’s left of society into chaos. K’s discovery leads him on a quest to find Rick Deckard (Harrison Ford), a former LAPD blade runner who has been missing for 30 years.

So let’s see: 30 years after society-shifting events a young, curious hero makes a discovery that leads him on a perilous journey to find an old pro who just might be the key to mankind’s salvation? Put Deckard in a beard and robe and make Gosling a younger British woman with a laser sword and you’ve got Episode VII in a nutshell. Not that I’m complaining. They could remake The Little Engine Who Could as a Blade Runner sequel and I’d still be throwing my money at them with both hands.

The biggest reveal here is Gosling’s character name, K, which doesn’t sound like a name at all to me, at least not a human name. Could the replicant be after the runner this time around? Find out October 6th, 2017, when Blade Runner 2049 hits theaters.
