What’s New to Stream on Netflix for July 2019

Four Martin Scorsese films are new to Netflix this month, and there's a good chance one or two of them will be new to you too.
Netflix July

Some people spend their days arguing over the merits of Netflix, but the rest of us are too busy enjoying new movies, engaging series, and fun specials. It’s just one more way to re-watch the movies we already love and find new ones to cherish, and this month sees some of both hitting the service.

The complete list of movies and shows hitting Netflix this month — July 2019 — is below, but first I’m going to highlight a few that stand apart from the bunch.

Netflix Pick of the Month

Fred Cavaye’s 2010 action/thriller Point Blank is a fast-paced and exciting watch, and it’s well worth seeking out. Whether you’ve seen it or not, though, an American remake is heading our way this month with some intriguing talent attached. Point Blank [Netflix Original] arrives on July 12th with Anthony Mackie and Frank Grillo in the leads, and while that Captain America match up is already worth the price of admission the film’s director makes it even more of a must-see. Joe Lynch’s previous two films — Mayhem (2017) and Everly (2014) — are fun blasts of action and wit. His latest may be a remake, but I expect the energy with be all Lynch.

A Martin Scorsese Marathon

I usually like to highlight the oldest film coming to Netflix each month as they’re typically a rarity among the newer arrivals, but July has four films that are far older than the rest. Not coincidentally, they’re also from the same director, Martin Scorsese. You’ve probably heard of him. Two of the four are well known while the remaining pair are far lesser seen entries in his filmography, but all four are worth a watch or re-watch. Who’s That Knocking at My Door? (1967) stars Harvey Keitel as a young man in love who discovers his sweetheart was assaulted years prior. Mean Streets (1973) sees Scorsese move into the crime world with Keitel and Robert De Niro in the lead roles as young thugs of different mentalities. Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore (1974) is one of the filmmaker’s rare female-led features and stars Ellen Burstyn as a single mother trying to make things right. You’re probably already familiar with Taxi Driver (1976).

Foreign Films

Two smaller films from international imaginations are arriving this month to remind viewers that Hollywood doesn’t own “movies.” First up is Sicilian Ghost Story (2017) which unfolds on July 6th with its moody tale of a young teen whose crush disappears under mysterious circumstances. It’s a darkly beautiful look at innocence and the necessary willingness to dream. Cities of Last Things [Netflix Original] reveals itself on July 11th, and while I haven’t seen it yet I’m intrigued by the synopsis which says it tells the story across three eras, three seasons, three nights, in the same city, in reverse chronology. Color me intrigued.

A Little Show Called Stranger Things

Netflix

People often complain about the abundance of branded content on Netflix, but while it’s not all great (or even good) its availability is a smart play by the streaming service. As studios take back their content for their own services, there was a risk that Netflix would be left with fewer and fewer options. That’s no longer the case as they create original series and films that find audiences and keep them coming back for more. Case in point? The huge pop culture phenomenon that is Stranger Things. Season three premieres on July 4th and sees the 80s-set gang return, this time for a summer adventure, and while the requisite action and genre elements remain the characters are given more time and room to stretch and delight regular viewers.
