Swearing to protect her family, Mulan disguises herself as a male and heads off to join the army.
When her father realizes that she’s gone, he summons their ancestors to protect her. We then see a phoenix on its way to watch over her. Some fans would undoubtedly prefer to see the dragon Mushu from the original movie, but phoenixes are cool in their own right.
Say hello to Commander Tung (Donnie Yen), a mentor to Mulan and the other budding soliders. He asks Mulan her name, and she responds with a fake alias. From the outset, it’s evident Tung thinks there’s something peculiar about his new recruit.
