Is there anything he can’t do?
Audiences who saw Moana over the weekend – of which there were many – already know the pleasure of watching Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson sing “You’re Welcome.” It’s one of the songs crafted by Hamilton creator Lin-Manuel Miranda, composer Mark Mancina and South Pacific fusion musician Opetaia Foa’i. Moreover, it’s showing us something delightful and new: Johnson’s singing chops.
The man really can do anything.
Beyond the cheery song and dance, full of lore and charm, this clip also gives us a look at the animation at work in the film from directors Ron Clements and John Musker. There’s a mix of 2D elements with the smooth 3D elements that creates additional depth and texture. The film also does a wonderful job using Maui’s tattoos to tell a story, something very true to the Polynesian culture.
Moana is currently in theaters and from what I hear, there’s also a great Bowie-esque musical number from Jemaine Clement.
