The Artistic Influences of Movie Posters

By  · Published on October 2nd, 2017

Art comes from art – even if it’s on a poster.

Perfect shots don’t spontaneously assemble in a vacuum. No art does. While many films have stills grabbed straight from the halls of the Louvre, film posters allow their graphic designers the same kind of artistic freedom. Even when many modern designs consist of throwing the ensemble cast up in a hodgepodge of blue-and-orange-hued faces and costumes, classical layouts aren’t dead.

Essayist Ignacio Montalvo put together a video finding the inspirations for some of the most recognizable film posters of all time. E.T., The Silence of the Lambs, hell, even Scream owe their iconic marketing to some of the greatest paintings ever made.
