Warner Bros. Looking to Relaunch ‘Mortal Kombat’

According to Bloody-Disgusting, Warner Bros. is looking to relaunch a new Mortal Kombat movie. Word on the street is that it will be a ‘darker’ approach to the material in contrast with the original film series, focusing on Rayden’s betrayal by a woman he loves while on a spy mission, rendering him a cold shadow of his former self, while Johnny Cage faces his childhood fear of bats. (Note, the second sentence of this paragraph isn’t true…yet).

After the embarrassment that was last year’s Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li, it’s perplexing that a studio would want to relaunch a movie franchise for another 90’s combat arcade game. Though, unlike the PG-13 entries of the original Mortal Kombat movie series, an embrace of the then-photorealistic gore that made the videogame famous would no doubt be warmly received by fans of the game if WB does indeed go through with this relaunch.

A script is currently being penned by Oren Uziel, whose Shimmer Lake is one of the selection’s for 2009’s “Black List,” a list of the industry’s best unproduced screenplays.

What do you think? What would you like to see in a Mortal Kombat remake?
