Sons of Anarchy, FX, Airs Wednesday 10/9c
Episode: “Old Bones” (Season 1, Episode 7)
Synopsis: When old bones are discovered on the outskirts of Charming, Clay (Ron Perlman) is forced to deal with secrets he buried long ago. Meanwhile, the club sets its sights on prize money, backing Half-Sack in a bare-knuckle brawl. ATF agent Kohns investigation turns personal when his true intentions are revealed.
Review: Last week showrunner Kurt Sutter and the writing team of Sons of Anarchy showed us that not only could they build tension from week to week, but that they payoff was quite grand. And this week they proved once again why their show is easily one of the most exciting shows on all of television, new or old. Just like last week, we continue to see some of the shows many layers unfold — this time it was the layer that saw Agent Kohn (Jay Karnes) getting too close for comfort. Only it wasn’t Samcro that he got too close to, it was Tara. And like any good mid-season storyline, the brutal end to Agent Kohn’s run has paved the way for a whole host of new problems for Jax. Now he must deal with his re-emerging feelings for the hot doc and balance that with his loyalty to the club. It is the kind of quality drama, that comes from a special breed of writers, that is rare on television, possessed by only a handful of shows at a time. It is reminiscent of another great show that has been housed under the FX roof — Rescue Me.
And this sort of drama is the kind that has us looking forward to next week, waiting to see what is going to happen next. Of course, the tension between Jax and Clay is building, and the manipulative nature of Jax’s mommy dearest is going to play a big role in what is to come. I am also very excited to see the development of a few key relationships, including that of Jax and Tara — Maggie Siff is a wasted talent if not brought to the forefront, and it appears that I am not the only one who sees that. It is also encouraging to see that Taryn Manning is sticking around. She is attached to Half-Sack, played by Johnny Lewis, whom I believe to be one of the show’s most interesting characters. My hope is that his role in Samcro will continue to grow.
As I predicted, as we turn the corner toward the second half of season one, the best is yet to come. And that’s not to say that it hasn’t been good up to this point. As a matter of fact, it has been nothing short of superb. This is a show that has proven itself — great cast, most notably Charlie Hunnam; great writing; and above all, great drama. You don’t even have to be into bikes and the gangs that ride around on them — I know I wasn’t.
Up Next Week: With the IRA gun payment looming, Samcro scrambles to come up with the cash. The Mayans and Nords take a drastic step in strengthening their alliance. And Jax finds himself in a dangerous position with Tara.
