The Hollywood Foreign Press Association has announced a diverse bunch of contenders for their 2017 ceremony.
Early this morning, the nominations for the 74th annual Golden Globe Awards were announced. Laura Dern, Don Cheadle, and Anna Kendrick presented the nominations at the Beverly Hills hotel, which was broadcast live on the Golden Globes official website.
What sets the Golden Globes apart from other awards shows – such as the Emmys, the SAG Awards, and of course, the Academy Awards – is that it honors achievements in both film and television, therefore including a wider range of artistic works and performances.
Predictably, La La Land received the highest number of nominations – seven in total – but it is closely followed by the remarkable Moonlight, which received six mentions. These two films are perhaps the most critically-acclaimed of the year, but they are not in competition with each other at the Globes – La La Land falls into the category of musical/comedy, while Moonlight is a drama.
The Globes take comedies and musicals just as seriously as dramas, where other awards shows ignore comedies altogether. Whether or not one thinks Deadpool deserves any recognition, it was one of the biggest comedies of the year, and the Hollywood Foreign Press Association is not afraid to acknowledge that.
In terms of television and limited series, a diverse range of works were given nominations: from The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story to Jane the Virgin, Transparent, Insecure, Atlanta, and This is Us, the nominations accurately reflect the incredible stories brought to the small screen this year, many of which were created and brought to life by women, people of color, and members of the LGBTQ+ community.
Some of the most original and innovative works and performances of the year are reflected in the noms: Netflix’s Stranger Things, the NASA-set film Hidden Figures, Isabelle Huppert’s powerhouse performance in Elle, Colin Farrell’s hilariously deadpan acting in The Lobster, and Maren Ade’s eccentric Toni Erdmann. These works could not be more different from one another, but they reflect the incredible year of film and television which just passed. At least that is one good thing about 2016.
Below is the full list of nominations. Winners will be revealed on January 8, 2017.
