Your Guide to The Movies of Summer 2019

We look ahead to the movies we can't wait to watch in Summer 2019.
Summer Movie Guide

Brightburn (May 24th)

What is it? A child arrives from outer space, but rather than grow into a superman he becomes someone far more malicious.

Why should you see it? The idea of turning Superman’s early years into a horror movie sounds ridiculously fun, and while there’s a risk the movie just becomes a “Satanic kid” type of experience I’m hopeful for something more. It should hopefully dig into that moral divide and explore the ideas of nature vs nurture — maybe he’s evil, but could being raised by good people shift that intent? We’ll see.

Crawl (July 12th)

What is it? A young woman’s attempt to survive a hurricane is complicated when she’s trapped in a house filled with alligators.

Why should you see it? Did you even read the line above?! The film comes from director Alexandre Aja, and while I expect the gators to sadly be primarily CG creations Aja managed to deliver CG fish in Piranha (2010) without ruining the fun of the premise so I’m hopeful he’ll do the same here. Kaya Scodelario takes the lead here which is never bad news, and I’m already looking forward to pairing this film with 2010’s Burning Bright which sees a young woman trapped in a house during a hurricane with a tiger.

Godzilla: King of Monsters (May 31st)

What is it? Godzilla isn’t alone.

Why should you see it? I’ve been torn on the recent big monster reboots as both Godzilla (2014) and Kong: Skull Island (2017) are gorgeous monster movies that are also severely weak in the script and character departments. This latest entry is clearly every bit as beautiful, but I’m hoping director/co-writer Michael Dougherty (Trick ‘r’ Treat, 2007) has paid equal attention to areas beyond just the visuals.

Hobbs & Shaw (August 2nd)

What is it? Well it’s not justice for Han anyway.

Why should you see it? Look, the Fast & Furious films left the natural world behind back in 2011 with the release of the franchise highlight, Fast Five, and it hasn’t looked back since. This spin-off is embracing that with open arms as Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham fight evil and the laws of physics with equal abandon. Does it look dumb? Obviously. Are we going to watch the hell out of it? Obviously.

John Wick – Chapter 3 (May 17th)

What is it? A sequel to John Wick 2… what else do you need to know?

Why should you see it? The John Wick series already looks to go down as an all-timer in the action genre, and the trailer for chapter three promises more of the same. The films pay as much attention to world-building and cinematography as they do the action itself, and all of it has been aces so far. The same team is back to continue Wick’s story, and after the cliffhanger ending (of sorts) of chapter two we’re not shy about naming this among our most anticipated film of the summer and year.

Men In Black International (June 14th)

What is it? It’s not easy keeping intergalactic visitors to Earth in check, but someone’s got to do it.

Why should you see it? Maybe it’s just me, but I’d expect an “international” team to actually be, you know, representative of international countries. I get it though — who can argue with Tessa Thompson and Chris Hemsworth in the leads? Regardless, the film looks like good, sci-fi/action, and we can always use more of that.
