Why Watch? With so many comic book adaptations and superhero takes emerging year after year, every 365-day period becomes a mixed bag for quality when it comes to latex suit-donning crusaders on screen. Plus, myriad fan films make their way up through the ranks to provide alternate takes on all sorts of heroic icons. We’re awash in genre examples and have been for a decade.
With its title and a young child’s interest, this movie from director Tudor Giurgiu and writer Doru Lupeanu pivots off that cultural fascination to explore what it really means to be brave, to face danger, to be a hero. A contemplative, yet personable tone pervades while an adorable child and a sweet, playful father create an instantly familiar atmosphere. No wonder it recently won Best European Short Film at the European Film Awards.
It’s achingly simple – a two-man journey to a difficult destination – but it uses web shooters and hand-drawn cards to pull at the heartstrings. Fair warning: you may want to use your cape as a Kleenex.
