Required Reading: Distracting Movie Extras and Pop Culture Sins

LucasFilm

The best movie culture writing from around the internet-o-sphere.

There will be a quiz later. Just leave a tab open for us, will ya?

“Will We Ever Forgive George Lucas?” – Rob Bricken at io9 opens up the mail bag and answers an excellent assortment of queries. At the top of the pile, a smart take on what the new Star Wars movies would have to be like in order for the hissing crowds to crawl back to Lucas.

“7 Deadly Sins Of Talking About Pop Culture” – Also at io9, Charlie Jane Anders beats down a list of no-nos. Beyond non-consensual spoilers, there’s a few great reminders here, but every single person needs to read #7 and repeat it as a mantra.

“How Getting Wild Saved a ‘Lost’ Reese Witherspoon” – Kyle Buchanan at Vulture interviews the actress on the kind of role we don’t normally get to see her in.

“You have to understand, for someone who’s been doing this for as long as I’ve been doing it, it’s like, ‘Oh my gosh, finally!’ Finally, it’s so exciting to be honest about things. I developed it with my own money and an incredible producing partner, and then we went to the studios afterwards, because I did not want to hear, ‘We don’t want to see Reese doing that’ or ‘We don’t want to include the sexual scenes.’ Not that studios are bad – it’s just that sometimes when things go through too many filters and too many notes, they become distilled into something they weren’t from the beginning.”

“Video Games, Misogyny, And Terrorism: A Guide to Assholes” – Andrew Todd at Badass Digest bravely speaks out about the current rotten core of gaming culture that pollutes the majority population. I say bravely because the people he’s calling out as asshole are the kinds of assholes who response with cyber attacks and personal threats. Hopefully Todd doesn’t have any nude pictures of himself. Or at least hopefully they’re tasteful. I’m sure they’re tasteful. (Sidenote: not only do the two idiots from the Sarkeesian Effect project look exactly like you imagine they would, but the funniest part is the furry dildo one smoking a cigarette like it’s a cigar. Also the way he says, “thoughts,” like it took careful consideration and effort to choose that word.)

“Soderbergh: the wilderness years” – Jason Bailey at The Dissolve looks at the turmoil that sometimes comes after fantastic, early success.

“12 of the Most Distracting Extras in Movie History” – Rudie Obias at Mental Floss hates the over-excited businessman from Ghostbusters, and you should, too. The kid from North by Northwest always irritated me, but I’d never noticed the one from The Dark Knight Rises. That one’s a complete failure of an entire team, not just a single day player.
