See how fun puns can be? Me neither. But they were necessary to bring a point across in this case. I’m not sure why, but I have a feeling that we’ll all learn something from it.
While we ponder the possible deep lesson that my pun-tastic headline has to teach us, we should also be celebrating that Jeremy Renner has just been cast for a movie being directed by Ben Affleck (who I believe owns an insurance company with a duck for a mascot).
The Hollywood Reporter is Hollywood reporting that Renner, fresh off his phenomenal performance in The Hurt Locker, will play the best friend of Affleck’s character in The Town for Warner Bros. The film is a project based on the Chuck Hogan novel “Prince of Thieves,” a book that came out just a few years ago and is a fantastic read.
Basically, the story from the page is about four friends (who happen to be thieves) in an Irish part of Boston. They all have very different personalities, but one falls for the beautiful bank manager of a place they robbed while an FBI agent also falls for her. The book itself has a ton of great action sequences which I’m hoping translate beautifully into the movie.
If it’s starting to sound like The Departed, it probably should. Hogan’s writing, at least in “Prince of Thieves” is pretty reminiscent of other neo-noir writers like Dennis Lehane so the movie itself very well could be a blend of Mystic River and any other number of Irish gang stories.
Either way, get ready to ship back up to Boston.
And why, you ask, should we be celebrating Jeremy Renner being cast alongside Affleck (and Jon Hamm and Rebecca Hall)? Because he’s a damned fine actor who deserves to be celebrated. I’ll be surprised (or at least morally outraged) if he doesn’t make the short list for Best Actor contenders this year. And if you haven’t seen The Hurt Locker yet, you should remedy that.
What do you think?
