Johnny Bubble and the Perils of Kissing a Duck

Short of the Day

A surreal Claymation short from Adult Swim’s Alan Resnick.

If you’re familiar with Adult Swim, then no doubt you’re familiar with Baltimore-based comedian, visual artist, and filmmaker Alan Resnick, cuz he’s all over it. Resnick came to the network from the world of YouTube where his web series Alan Tutorial amassed hundreds of thousands of views, and once on TV he spread his trademark brand of absurd hilarity into projects like This House Has People In It, Unedited Footage of a Bear, and Live Forever as You Are Now with Alan Resnick.

His most recent work is this delightfully surreal little Claymation short entitled Johnny Bubble. It starts with a guy just wanting to smooch on a duck for a minute, and ends in death. In between, well, I’m not too sure just what’s going down, but I know I loved watching it, and in this day and age that’s not nothing. In addition to the strangely-sweet storyline Resnick has going, the Claymation is seamless and captivating, like watching David Lynch mess around with Play-Doh. And at just three minutes, the film acts like a miniskirt: long enough to cover the subject but short enough to keep things interesting. Johnny Bubble will either lighten your heart or haunt your dreams but whichever way, it’ll stay with you for a good while after watching.
