First ‘Rise of the Planet of the Apes’ Trailer Rises On the Planet of the Humans

“This is wrong, Will.”

Stunning commentary on the state of medical testing? Seething critique of prequel/rebooting a beloved sci-fi franchise? Straightforward reaction to the new title of the movie?

It’s probably all of the above, but it’s also one of two lines Freida Pinto has in the first trailer for Rise of the Planet of the Apes. It looks like a throwback to Robin Cook-style science thrillers. A modern-day Frankenstein tale where the patched-together man comes in the form of hundreds of primates swinging in the tree tops of your neighborhood.

Seriously, it feels like The Birds for a second, but much, much hairier.

Check out the trailer for yourself:

Spoiler alert: They did it. They blew it all up.

WETA does incredible work, and it’s interesting that they are promoting that name first and foremost. Of course, James Franco is all over this thing as well.

As for the content, it’s encouraging that it looks so stark. I like to think of the concept as a thousand smaller King Kongs roaming the streets, and that definitely works in my mind. It’s just a matter of how quickly the story can get around to the creature feature section after slamming down thoughtful comments about going too far in the science world.

There’s also something comforting about the freedom director Rupert Wyatt must have had. Probably none directorially since this is Fox, but probably a massive amount considering that the story only leads to the downfall of man. It gives the team license to take this in a much darker direction.

At any rate, it already looks far less cheesy than Tim Burton’s remake of the original. We’ll have to wait until August 5th to see if it works out, for that, is when Apes. Will. Rise.

Would you go see it?
