It’s getting to a point where greenlighting sequels is happening on absurd time-lines. We saw it happen last year with Star Trek and the announcement of a sequel in the works before the film hit theaters, but at least that was announced during the press junket for the release of the film. According to The Heat Vision Blog, Disney doesn’t want to wait 7 months for its turn in the media cycle – it wants to announce a sequel to Tron Legacy.
Reportedly, Edward Kitsis and Adam Horowitz have already hopped from their jobs producing Tron to working on a script for another.
There are several things to keep in mind here. The first is that the reality of them writing a script treatment is far from the thumbs up from a studio, but it’s clear that there’s something propelling them to do so. The second is that the gamble going on here is at once both exciting and moronic.
It’s exciting because it shows a certain faith on behalf of filmmakers. It’s moronic because the film might completely tank. I say that not because I have special insight to the film itself, but because of the general possibility of any film’s success or failure. Sure, the flick has a built-in fanbase, but that doesn’t guarantee success, and come December, that script Kitsis and Horowitz are working on might not be worth the paper it’s printed on.
Such is the nature of the beast.
