Christopher Guest Plans to Wait For Guffman on Broadway

How cool would it be for Corky St. Clair and Waiting for Guffman to actually make it all the way to Broadway?

Friday night, I was lucky enough to check out a Spinal Tap show in Houston – complete with their acoustic guitars turned all the way up to 11. It’s a very cool stage show where Harry Shearer, Michael McKean, and Christopher Guest (as themselves) get to banter back and forth, play a ton of songs from all of their movies, and show some very cool videos for fans of the 25-year old mockumentary.

And, since we’re looking for news everywhere we can get it, we’ll take the opportunity to get excited that Christopher Guest announced to the crowd (during a short Q and A portion) that he was hoping to work with a business/artistic partner to adapt Waiting for Guffman as a Broadway show.

Corky St. Clair may make it to The Great White Way after all. How cool is that?

The idea of a stage show musical version of the film is pretty meta – which seems right up their street – and if it was handled closely by Guest, I have no doubt that the quality would be excellent. Although, I’m not sure how well awkwardness translates to the stage.

So basically there’s almost no information about it other than the intent by a creative genius to carry it through. Hopefully, he’ll be able to pull it off.

What do you think? How excited for a Guffman musical would you be?
