Swedish author Sieg Larsson’s thriller The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo has made some waves as of late, with the Swedish language film adaptation from director Niels Arden Oplev currently ripping up the festival circuit here in The States. The original text has also caught the eye of David Fincher, who plans to adapt it for an English-language film in the very near future. Steve Zaillian (Schindler’s List, Hannibal) is already working on the screenplay.
And according to Times Online, Fincher is already working on casting. They are reporting that British actress Carey Mulligan, hot off her Oscar nomination for An Education, is “set” to play the tattooed, ruthless computer hacker known as Lisbeth (at least, that’s her name in the book).
While this report is still awaiting official confirmation from either Fincher or producer Scott Rudin, it is certainly one that holds some interest. Mulligan is a special talent whose next few roles will hopefully show off some range. The role of Lisbeth is a complete 180-degree turn from her character in An Education. This character is asocial, violent and extremely intelligent. She has none of the naivety of An Education’s Jenny, so it would be an interesting shift for the young actress. That said, it would be a great choice for her to branch out under the guidance of David Fincher.
Sources are saying that this new Girl with the Dragon Tattoo film won’t go into production until the full Swedish trilogy is complete, but that won’t be two long. Both sequels, The Girl Who Played with Fire and The Girl Who Kicked the Hornets’ Nest, are scheduled to be released in the United States by the end of the this year. This means that Fincher could be in production shortly and have his remake in American theaters in early 2011. Color me interested, indeed.
