The film’s screenplay won two big awards over the weekend, while ‘Get Out’ was also honored.

Leading up to the Academy Awards, there are some predictors to keep an eye on. The Writers Guild of America Awards often align with the Oscars picks for screenplay awards, but recently they’ve shown a trend of lining up with the Best Picture winner as well. If history repeats itself this would mean Call Me By Your Name or Get Out could seriously challenge for the Best Picture Oscar come March 4th.

Last year, the WGA awarded Moonlight Best Original Screenplay and Arrival Best Adapted Screenplay. The Oscars classified Moonlight as an adapted screenplay and awarded it this honor, along with Best Picture and Best Supporting Actor. The previous year, WGA winners Spotlight and The Big Short went on to win Oscars for Original and Adapted Screenplay, respectively, with the former also winning Best Picture.

This year, Call Me By Your Name took home the award for Best Adapted Screenplay and Get Out was awarded Best Original Screenplay. These wins were not big surprises when announced during the ceremony held last night, but Call Me By Your Name in particular does come out of this weekend more on track for a screenplay win at the Oscars than Get Out.

On Saturday night, Call Me By Your Name also picked up the USC Scripter Award for Adapted Screenplay. The last seven Scripter winners have gone on to win the Oscar in the same category and it would be shocking if James Ivory‘s script, which is adapted from the novel by André Aciman, didn’t follow suit. Recent Scripter wins that also went on to win Best Picture include Moonlight and 12 Years a Slave, so Call Me By Your Name will be in good company if it wins the top award in addition to a screenplay honr at the Oscars following its Scripter win.

Although Get Out won at the WGA Awards, its biggest competitor for Best Original Screenplay, Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri, was ineligible for the award. Had Three Billboards been nominated, there’s a good chance it could have won, but this wouldn’t have been guaranteed. Jordan Peele‘s screenplay has beaten Martin McDonagh’s when the two were in the same category before, including at last month’s Critics’ Choice Awards. Get Out isn’t a shoo-in for Best Original Screenplay the way Call Me By Your Name is with Best Adapted Screenplay just yet, but it is certainly picking up some momentum heading to the Academy Awards.

As last year’s Oscars proved, no matter how much research goes into predictions and how much time is spent speculating, surprises happen. Right now, The Shape of Water still looks like the frontrunner for Best Picture with Three Billboards following close behind it. But with Oscar balloting still happening, don’t put it past Call Me By Your Name or Get Out to shake things up next month and take home more than just screenplay awards.

On the TV side of things at the WGA Awards, The Handmaid’s Tale and Big Little Lies both continued their dominance with the former picking up awards for Best Drama Series and Best New Series and the latter taking home the award for Long Form Adapted Series. With Big Little Lies adding Meryl Streep for season two to air in 2019 and The Handmaid’s Tale set to return April 25th with an exploration beyond the world of the first season, both shows stand a good chance of impressing at award shows for years to come.
