‘Black Nativity’ Trailer Heals Through Christmas Carols

Based on a libretto by Langston Hughes, Black Nativity looks and feels a bit corny because of its Christmas setting, but there’s a lot to love in this trailer. For one, it was directed by Kasi Lemmons who made the fantastic Talk to Me. For two, a cast boasting Forest Whitaker, Angela Bassett, Jennifer Hudson and Mary J. Blige (as a character called, wait for it, Platinum Fro) is solid grounding when it comes to potential.

It’s a tried-and-true story, but it also might have the power to beat back cynicism with song.

Black Nativity hits theaters November 27th.
