As some of you may or may not know, I have a history with the National Treasure franchise. That history includes a flask, some fire water, and a hell of a good time at the cineplex . Unfortunately, as you may know, watching National Treasure sober is ill-advisable.
However, I’ve lightened up on the series because they aren’t atrocious. They’re TBS Movies. The kind of movies that harmlessly run on TBS on Saturdays. You end up leaving them on while you vacuum or something, and you recognize what’s happening in them, but they aren’t to be taken seriously.
Cue the fanfare, friends, because according to Coming Soon, the writing team of Carlo Bernard and Doug Miro are on-board for National Treasure 3. Most will point to their recent work for Prince or Persia (or also The Sorcerer’s Apprentice if you’re keeping score), but that really only means that they’re largely untested. At least by the public. Bruckheimer seems to dig them, and the guy does know a thing or two about producing movies.
I would point to the two films we’ve seen from them: The Uninvited and The Great Raid. One is a decent horror remake that stays fairly safe, and the other is a really well done war movie that showcases some strong writing. Definitely two sides of the coin, but they seem to have fallen in with team Disney, and that’s a great place to be.
Although, I feel the need to pour one out for The Wibberleys – the husband and wife team that brought us the first two National Treasure films. And G-Force. And they’re apparently writing Fantastic Voyage.
Wibberleys, you will be missed.
On a more personal note, I can’t be the only one who thinks Nic Cage should take his character from Bad Lieutenant and transplant him into this world, can I?
