HBO’s mega-hit Game of Thrones isn’t even currently on the air (we miss you so), but that doesn’t mean that there’s not plenty of information and buzz and chatter about George R.R. Martin’s heartbreaking baby to share until the show returns for its fifth season sometime next year. Today, however, has brought us a pair of perfectly timed news items that center on the very same (hotly contested and debated) subject: just who Jon Snow’s parents really are. Wait, are you already shocked because you didn’t even think that was a thing? Oh, you’re not ready. So, what do you think you know about Jon Snow’s parentage? Hey, you might know something, but you’ll definitely know more than nothing after the break.

Jon Snow’s true parentage has long been a subject of hot discussion among fans of Martin’s books (though it appears to be less of a thing with just show-watchers, hey, only so much stuff can be folded in at one time), and there’s a popular theory in place that explains that, well, Jon really isn’t Ned Stark’s son. And that’s not all! Should this theory prove to be true, it has the potential to change the face of Westeros and its royal lineage in a big way. This particular theory has been floated for quite some time, but a brand new YouTube video (via BuzzFeed and Gawker) quite neatly explains it, clarifies it and lays out some major back-up from the books. It’s rare to find a fan theory that’s this concisely explained, so lucky us.

Oh, what? What? Right? We know. We know. If you’re a fan of the book series, the odds are that you’re pretty well-acquainted with this theory anyway, but it sure is nice to see it laid out so perfectly and with so much back-up. Seems pretty clear, right? If this is the first you’ve heard of it, go ahead, watch it again, we understand.
But could it possibly get just a bit more clear? Perhaps with a big nod to the television series itself? In a word ‐ yes.
Vulture just so happened to sit down with Sean Bean (Ned Stark himself!) this week, and the former Game of Thrones star did not mince words on the subject, and when he was asked about some other fan theories, he did not mince words: “I’ve definitely got some unfinished business that needs to be resolved there. I’m obviously not Jon Snow’s dad. And you need that to be revealed at some point, don’t you?”
