In its 29th annual awards, the Film Independent Spirit Awards once again give film connoisseurs a seemingly more honest precursor to tonight’s Academy Awards. In a ceremony hosted by Patton Oswalt and aired on IFC, the awards once again celebrated “artist-driven filmmaking and the finest achievements in independent cinema.” This year’s big winner was Steve McQueen harrowing drama 12 Years a Slave, which brought home awards for Best Feature, Best Director, Best Screenplay, Best Supporting Actress (Lupita Nyong’o) and Best Cinematography.
