Man, Grindhouse would have been so much better if both halves were directed by Robert Rodriguez.
Rodriguez has released a special Cinco De Mayo themed trailer for his upcoming action flick, Machete, and it looks all kinds of awesome. For those keeping track at home, Machete began life as one of several fake trailers for the intermission between Grindhouse halves that Rodriguez did with Quentin Tarantino. It was a hardcore, over-the-top, violence-soaked teaser about a Mexican day-worker (Danny Trejo) who is framed for an execution and left for dead. He lives of course and sets out for revenge against the men who did him wrong. Guns, blades, and pure mexploitational rage filled the trailer, and it became popular enough that Rodriguez decided to turn it into an actual movie.
And today the real trailer for the real movie has landed online over at Aint It Cool. Let’s watch it together shall we?
Goddamn this looks like fun. In addition to Trejo returning as the title character, Rodriguez somehow managed to gather a pretty solid cast around him. Jessica Alba, Michelle Rodriguez, Steven Seagal, Robert DeNiro, Cheech Marin, Jeff Fahey… and the “introducing Don Johnson” gag is a nice touch. Alba and Rodriguez both look especially fine, and along with everyone else seem to enjoy being able to go all out with their acting. The movie looks to be a hard R for violence, the action looks to be over-the-top and ridiculous, and the dialogue looks to be eminently quotable (including Alba’s impassioned speech “We didn’t cross the border… the border crossed us!”)
Machete hits theaters on September 3rd.
What do you think of the trailer? Would you rather go south of the border with Alba or Rodriguez?
