Star Wars Anthology: Rogue One already has one of the best actresses of 2015. In fact, Felicity Jones, a recent Oscar nominee for last year’s The Theory of Everything, is the only on-screen talent so far confirmed for the Star Wars spinoff prequel. Ben Mendelsohn, meanwhile, “can say definitively there is nothing that is substantial about those rumors” about him being in the movie.
But Jones may be getting some partners in crime very soon (it begins shooting this summer, after all), and one of them happens to be the best supporting actor of 2015. No, not Oscar winner J.K. Simmons. The actual best supporting actor of last year is non-nominee (except by me and the rest of the Georgia Film Critics Association) Riz Ahmed, who is outstanding in Nightcrawler, among other things.
Ahmed is attached to Rogue One, according to Badass Digest, or at least in talks, according to The Wrap. And also according to The Wrap, so may be Sam Claflin, currently best known as Finnick in the Hunger Games movies. He’s not one of the best actors of 2015, but he is mighty handsome, so he can play the mighty handsome member of the ensemble, which Badass Digest reports will be Dirty Dozen (or at least Magnificent Seven) size.
The bunch will collectively play a band of rebels on a mission to steal the Death Star plans, which will wind up in Princess Leia’s hands then R2-D2’s circuits at the beginning of Star Wars (A New Hope). Word is that some of these main characters will not survive to see the end of the movie let alone the full success of his or her mission when the Death Star is destroyed in the Battle of Yavin. Of those who die, one or more could be justified narratively to be killed off because there will supposedly be some nasty or simply morally questionable members on the team.
