Through some confluence of timing and raging hormones, I saw 1995’s Bad Boys, the feature debut of Michael Bay, at the most perfect time of my life. Since then, warts and all, it has been among my most cherished action cinema experiences. It’s not even a guilty pleasure, as I do not feel guilty about it at all.
So yes, I’m one of those ridiculous humans that’s been clamoring for a third Bad Boys movie for years. They do exist.
In an announcement today, Sony Pictures appears to want to make all my weird dreams come true. According to The Wrap, Sony has marked released dates for Bad Boys 3 (2/17/17) and a Bad Boys 4 (7/3/19). That’s two Bad Boys films for the emotional price of one. No other details were revealed, including the very important involvement of Will Smith, Martin Lawrence, Michael Bay, Jerry Bruckheimer, or even perhaps Joe Pantoliano. What matters here is that there’s enough movement on the franchise’s extension to warrant a release date.
Elsewhere in Sony’s cinematic repertoir, release dates have now been set for the adaptation of Stephen King’s The Dark Tower, further sequels for Underworld and Resident Evil, and the video game adaptation Uncharted. Sony has also moved Paul Feig’s Ghostbusters up to July 15, 2016, one week before it’s originally scheduled date.
