Remember That Thing You Already Knew? It’s True! Joss Whedon Is Directing The Avengers!

There’s been some pretty exciting news coming out of Comic-Con today… Guillermo Del Toro remaking Disney’s Haunted Mansion, a new trailer for Tron Legacy, a possible sequel to In the Company Of Men. Ok, so maybe it isn’t all that exciting. But now news has hit that trumps them all…

Joss Whedon is directing The Avengers!

Maybe you recall us reporting that same news a little over three months ago, but this time it’s for real. Whedon just confirmed those earlier reports at Comic-Con today during the Visionaries panel with JJ Abrams. He joked that the news hadn’t been confirmed previously because Marvel couldn’t afford to pay for a press release.

Hit the jump for Whedon’s response to a couple probing questions…

Whedon was pressed for more info but was obviously unable to say much. He did acknowledge that he’s still working on the outline and then expressed his motivation for accepting the gig.

The thing that I love about it, the thing that made me excited do it was just how completely counter-intuitive it is. It makes no sense. these people should not even be in the same room let alone on the same team. And that to me is the very definition of family.”

An audience question concerning how he expects to blend his very distinct writing voice with Marvel’s established world resulted in this response. (Thanks to CinemaBlend for the exact text.)

Obviously I’m going to bring some of myself to it. I’m an artist who wishes to create something that comes from within, but at the same time, yes they have an established tone, I’m going to be respectful of that. I’m culling things from all these different movies, I have to blend all of that. Ultimately that would result ins something unique anyway.”

So that’s that. News we already knew… confirmed. The actual Avengers panel is on Saturday, and here’s hoping Whedon’s announcement wasn’t meant to be saved for then. Otherwise they’re probably scrambling for some other newsworthy revelation right now. May I suggest a cameo from Nathan Fillion as Ant-Man?
