Welcome back to everyone’s favorite Friday afternoon mini-feature: Movies Getting Released on Days. Just kidding! It’s the Release Date Round-Up! Yee haw! This time around, we check out the latest dates for Summit Entertainment’s feature adaptation of a beloved YA novel, The Perks of Being a Wallflower, which has been shoved safely away from either Liberal Arts or The Master (your call), along with three very special (read: very different) Universal films, all getting the boot around the release date schedule.
Break out your day planners, and read on for new release dates for The Perks of Being a Wallflower, Oblivion, Mama, and Rush.
The Perks of Being a Wallflower
The release date: Summit Entertainment has moved the film back a week, to September 21.
Previous date: September 14.
Why? I’ll tell you why ‐ The Master. Kids love The Master, right? Well, the kids who read the source material for Perks do, because they’re all grown up and cool now and they’re all huge fans of Paul Thomas Anderson. Obviously.
Currently slated for that date? Dredd, End of Watch, House at the End of the Street, Trouble With the Curve.
What it means: It’s a nice move to get it away from both Liberal Arts and The Master, and it gives moviegoers looking for something not action-y, scary, or crotchety to watch. But, man, would this have been nice some counter-programming for the latest Resident Evil.
Mama
The release date: Just set for January 28, 2013.
Previous date: None.
Why? January wasteland. Sorry, Jessica Chastain. I’ll still be there ‐ I’d watch you in anything.
Currently slated for that date? Broken City and The Last Stand.
What it means: Again, January wasteland. But, then again, late January might be a nice place to stick a tidy little Guillermo del Toro-produced supernatural thriller that could surprise everyone and make its price back.
Rush
The release date: September 20, 2013.
Previous date: None.
Why? The spot was open.
Currently slated for that date? Nothing else. Victory for Chris Hemsworth and Formula 1 racing!
What it means: The film has some effects to finish.
Oblivion
The release date: IMAX on April 12, 2013, regular theaters on April 19, 2013.
Previous date: April 26, 2013.
Why? They’re going with the Mission: Impossible early IMAX release for another major Tom Cruise release. And it’s going to do gangbusters.
Currently slated for that date? The 12th puts it against Evil Dead, the 19th goes up with Scary Movie 5.
What it means: This thing is going to own the box office. No doubt about it.
