Giant animals smashing up cities? Sounds like a good time.

We’ve all heard about the curse of videogame movies. No matter who they attach or how they approach the material it never seems to work well enough together. If there is one actor who could accomplish the feat of making a good videogame movie it would be Dwayne Johnson. That’s what he will attempt with Rampage, a new disaster film based on the classic videogame.

Along with the director of San Andreas, Dwayne Johnson will once again tackle the genre of the disaster movie. But this isn’t just any old disaster film, this one features animals that have been mutated to giant size. Dwayne Johnson is Davis Okoye, who apparently likes spending more time with animals than people. In the year 2017, who could blame him. One of his favorites is a gorilla named George, who Okoye rescued when the gorilla was two years old. When a mysterious artifact lands on Earth, it has strange effects on George, making him grow to an incredible size. George isn’t the only animal affected by the artifact as other animals have grown to monstrous size, as a wolf and crocodile have also grown.

Sometimes you just need a Dwayne Johnson action movie and Rampage certainly looks like it will live up to that billing. Whereas too many titles based on videogames have some kind of serious plot, Rampage was never all that serious to start with. Giant creatures destroying cities don’t usually set up a compelling narrative.

Here’s the synopsis for Rampage:

Primatologist Davis Okoye (Johnson), a man who keeps people at a distance, shares an unshakable bond with George, the extraordinarily intelligent, silverback gorilla who has been in his care since birth. But a rogue genetic experiment gone awry mutates this gentle ape into a raging creature of enormous size. To make matters worse, it’s soon discovered there are other similarly altered animals. As these newly created alpha predators tear across North America, destroying everything in their path, Okoye teams with a discredited genetic engineer to secure an antidote, fighting his way through an ever-changing battlefield, not only to halt a global catastrophe but to save the fearsome creature that was once his friend.

Rampage costars Naomie Harris, Malin Akerman, Jake Lacy, Joe Manganiello and Jeffrey Dean Morgan. It opens on April 20th, 2018.
