Hollywood is all into female Expendables and female Ghostbusters and now it seems they’re also going to give us female dwarves. That doesn’t exactly sound like a novel idea on its own, but in the context of a Snow White movie it is. Especially if you’ve forgotten all about the female dwarf cousins in Filmation’s early ’90s animated Snow White sequel, Happily Ever After. In the Disney classic, though, as well as both Mirror Mirror and Snow White and the Huntsman, the dwarves were all men. For the latter’s sequel, that will change.
Unlike Happily Ever After we’re not getting an all-female batch of dwarves in the follow-up, but according to The Hollywood Reporter there will be at least two joining the gang. That’s a favorable addition of women characters considering this Snow White movie is down a Snow White. The sequel, simply titled The Huntsman, has already upped the ratio with an extra female villain, who will be played by Emily Blunt, plus Jessica Chastain in an unrevealed role. The actresses cast for the new diminutive ladies are Alexandra Roach and Sheridan Smith.
Roach, who normally is 5’7" but will be digitally shortened on screen as was the case for the dwarves in the previous movie, is probably best known for Joe Wright’s Anna Karenina and as the young Margaret Thatcher in The Iron Lady, seen below.
Smith, normally only 5’2", will be familiar to anyone who saw Quartet or Hysteria, seen below in the latter as “Molly the Lolly.”
They’re less known and much younger than the actors we saw as the seven dwarves in Snow White and the Huntsman, but hopefully they’ll have significant parts in the fairy tale story, which is said to take place before the first installment.
We previously learned that at least 5’8" Nick Frost (who recently appeared alongside Roach in Cuban Fury) will be back for The Huntsman as the dwarf “Nixon.” He and the ladies will also be joined by 5’7" comedic actor Rob Brydon, most familiar for starring opposite Steve Coogan in the The Trip and The Trip to Italy. He also appeared in the new live-action Cinderella, all too briefly.
The Huntsman hits theaters on April 22, 2016.
