Here’s what’s coming to Hulu this month!
Hulu has been stuck in the third place position when it comes to movie streaming behind Netflix and Amazon Prime because most people still see them strictly as a home for next-day television. They have movies too, though, and more than a few of them are terrific gems that make Hulu a destination for more than just TV.
The complete list of new movies hitting Hulu this month — February 2018 — is below, but I wanted to highlight the best of the bunch along with several others worth seeking out.
The Best
Action cinema got a beautifully-stylized and kick-ass infusion last year in the form of The Villainess (available 2/21), and yes, of course it’s from South Korea. The director of 2012’s terrific Confession of Murder returns with a film that’s one part La Femme Nikita and two parts awesome, and in addition to featuring a highly memorable female lead it’s loaded with stunning set-pieces guaranteed to leave you wondering just how they were accomplished. Watch it loud.
New Releases
In addition to numerous catalog titles hitting Hulu this month there are also a handful of brand new titles too. One of the best of the bunch is A Taxi Driver (available 2/7), a true story out of South Korea (yes, again) starring the eternally awesome Song Kang-ho as a man caught up in history. The film captures an important moment in the country’s move towards real democracy, and it’s a sadly relevant tale even today. Kathryn Bigelow’s Detroit (available 2/23) is similarly themed to a real historical tragedy, but for my tastes at least it’s made unappealing by its endless stream of brutality and cruelty. The flip-side of all of this is John Carroll Lynch’s delightful, low-key look at one old man named Lucky (available 2/11). Harry Dean Stanton’s final performance is a love letter to a tremendous career, and it gives him the kind of send-off any actor would kill for. The festival darling Beach Rats (available 2/5) is also new to Hulu, but I haven’t seen it.
Saddle Up for Some Westerns
They really don’t make enough westerns these days, but luckily there are plenty of great ones already available that we can re-watch them whenever we want. A pair of the best hit Hulu this month from completely opposite sides of the genre spectrum. Mel Brooks’ Blazing Saddles is a comedy classic that never loses its numerous charms, while Sergio Leone’s The Good the Bad and the Ugly is just a flat-out masterpiece of action, atmosphere, and score. 1985’s Rustler’s Rhapsody is also available, and while it’s no classic it is technically a western/comedy.
So Much Rollerball
Norman Jewison’s 1975 action/sci-fi satire, Rollerball, sees James Caan at the center of a killer sport in a world run by corporations. It scratches the genre itch while laying in some heavy, on-point commentary. The normally reliable John McTiernan delivered a remake in 2002, and swapping out Caan for Chris Klein is the least of its problems. Watch them back for shits and giggles.
