The third season of Lena Dunham’s Girls was put to bed this past Sunday night, and we’re already speculating about what the next run has in store for those eponymous girls (and, more importantly, their awesome boys). The series’ love for ending things on a cliffhanger only heightens anticipation ‐ there’s nothing like some good old-fashioned “will she? won’t she?” to keep people on board ‐ and the third season didn’t back down from putting some possible big changes into motion.
What will the fourth season look like? Who will be there? How much of it will we get? Will we get to meet Caroline’s spawn? Is is still going to be in Brooklyn? Loud yelling about Adam Driver! Everyone, get ahold of yourselves. We might not know the answers to all of those questions, but we sure do know a lot. Take a look.
The Fourth Season Will Only Run for Ten Episodes
The third season of the show expanded out into twelve episodes total, after two ten-episode seasons in a row, and it looks like they’re going back to that schedule for the fourth season.
Executive producer Judd Apatow shared with HitFix (via ScreenCrush), a little about his feelings on going back to ten episodes, saying:
I am a big fan of doing more episodes. Unfortunately, most of the shows on HBO are 10 episodes, so I think we will be doing 10 next year. We don’t line up with anybody when we do 12. That’s why we double-pumped episodes at the beginning of the season and it’s why there’s no one around us (at the end). I am a fan of shows being on the air for a long time so we can talk about them every week and are part of our lives. The idea that they pop up and disappear very quickly, I find disturbing. I think we’ll go back to 10 episodes next season, but I think this season benefited from having more. You can go deeper into the ideas you’re expressing.
Andrew Rannells Will Be a Series Regular
Deadline revealed way back in October that if the show got a fourth season, Rannells would come on board as a regular star for its full run. The series obviously got its fourth season order and Rannells made every single episode of the third season that he appeared in flintier, funnier, and wittier (and also formal short-ier), so this is just about the best hard and fast news we’ve got.
Adam Driver Will Still Be Around
When asked about locking in Driver for more episodes (especially given the rumors he will star in Star Wars: Episode VII) executive producer and co-showrunner Jenni Konner told Vulture, “Oh, we bank on him being around. We plan on having him around and I can’t really comment on his movie career because I’m not his agent.”
(Which Might Be Why) No One Is Giving Up on Hannah and Adam
Konner also shared, “I actually think they’re a pretty incredible couple because to me the way to be happy in a relationship is to continue to grow, and they both seem willing to do that.” You know what helps growing? Keeping one half of a couple around. Driver, it seems, really is in.
They Want Gaby Hoffmann Back In a Big Way
Konner also told Vulture a little bit about their vision for Hoffmann’s unhinged Caroline, saying: “The idea was we’re going to show you the craziest person we’ve seen all season and she’s going to be doing better than you. [Laughs.] Whether or not she will be back, that has a lot to do with scheduling. Gaby’s in Transparent now. But there’s no bigger dream than working with Gaby and Jon Glaser, so fingers crossed.”
Shooting Is Starting Soon
Star Allison Williams sat down with Entertainment Weekly last week, and when she was asked if they had started on the next season yet, she told them: “We haven’t. I’ve seen Lena and Jenni [Konner, Girls’ co-showrunners] a bunch lately, and they’ve started telling me Marnie things, and I don’t want to hear yet. I know they’re writing. I think they actually just finished writing. And we start shooting in a couple of weeks, actually.”
Hannah Will Go to Iowa (Well, Probably)
When asked by Vulture if Hannah will shove off for the two-year program at the Iowa Writers’ Workshop, Konner said, “I don’t think it’s a cliff-hanger. It’s not meant to be that ambiguous. That’s what she wants to be…?I’m not gonna tell you what to assume, but when she clutches that letter, I think she’s saying, ‘This is what I’m going to be doing. This is my choice.’ But you know, you never know with Hannah.”
Another sign that Hannah’s dreams of grad school writing might come true? That the show contacted the workshop’s director, Samantha Chang, before the story even hit the screen. Chang told Variety this week that “the show’s creative team had recently reached out to the university to tell them about the story arc.” Chang added, “I had an inkling it might not happen, but I had no idea it would happen so soon…Some of my students emailed me and told me about it.” Fun fact? Iowa grad students watch Girls.

Girls does not yet have a season premiere date set, but the last two seasons have debuted in mid-January, so bank on that for the fourth season.
