Disney is Remaking the Six Existing Star Wars Movies With LEGO

We’re getting a LEGO Batman movie, so it was only a matter of time before a new LEGO Star Wars project was announced. But what we’re actually getting is something different from a spin-off from The LEGO Movie, which featured minifig versions of Han Solo, Chewbacca, C-3PO and Lando along with the Millennium Falcon and The Empire Strikes Back’s exogorth (the space slug). According to The Hollywood Reporter’s Heat Vision blog, Disney has instead picked up a miniseries that will sort of remake the six existing Star Wars movies in LEGO form.

Titled LEGO Star Wars: Droid Tales, the series will air on Disney XD, home of Star Wars: Rebels, later this year, before the release of Star Wars: The Force Awakens. It will strangely consist of only five episodes, each one 22-minutes in length. They also won’t be exact replicas using LEGO versions of all the characters and vehicles and settings. Technically this thing will be set following the events of Return of the Jedi. Minifig C-3PO and minifig R2-D2 will be telling their tales chronologically from the start of The Phantom Menace through the rest while in the midst of a new plot involving an accidental kidnapping. Presumably Anthony Daniels will voice C-3PO, as he has on other LEGO Star Wars projects.

What is interesting about the concept is that the Star Wars movies in general have long been believed to be from the droids’ perspective. This doesn’t negate the idea, as LEGO Star Wars isn’t likely to be considered canon by fans, merely a fun take on the series similar to the Family Guy parodies. Still, if it’s popular enough, maybe Disney could expand on the concept for a solo feature focused on C-3PO and R2-D2 and again in LEGO form. But that might be too easily confused as being part of Warner Bros.’ LEGO Movie franchise, even if it took its characters more seriously.

If it’s not accepted as canon, can they continue the concept instead with LEGO remakes of the characters’ previous animated series, Star Wars: Droids? Oh, and of course they’ll have to do The Force Awakens and subsequent sequels, too.
