Marvel’s Ant-Man is due in theaters July 15, 2015. It begins shooting in two weeks, according to the cast and crew who took the stage this evening at Comic-Con. Kevin Feige and newly installed director Peyton Reed took to San Diego Convention Center’s Hall H to talk Ant-Man with some of their cast, confirming a few roles along the way. The studio finally confirmed the casting of Evangeline Lilly (Lost) and Corey Stoll (The Strain) and revealed their roles alongside the Comic-Con debuts of stars Paul Rudd and Michael Douglas.
According to a report from Marvel.com, “Lilly will play Hope Van Dyne, the daughter of Hank Pym, while Stoll will play Darren Cross, a.k.a. Yellowjacket, the antagonist of the film.”
“We’ve been fans of Evangeline for years, and couldn’t be more pleased that she’s agreed to join us on Ant-Man’s journey to the big screen,” said Marvel’s Kevin Feige. “We look forward to audiences learning more about her character when she joins forces with Hank Pym and Scott Lang in 2015.”
“Corey brings depth to every role he plays,” continued Feige. “As a major part of the Ant-Man ensemble, we all wanted an actor who could be both cunning and sympathetic, and help create a character as dynamic as Marvel’s best antagonists.”
According to various media in attendance, the story revolves around the company that Hank Pym (Douglas) starts with Darren Cross. When things go sour, Pym becomes mentor to Scott Lang (Rudd) and they go up against Cross, who has acquired similar powers as Pym (the ability to dramatically alter his physical size).
In the comics, the only iteration of Hope Van Dyne (or Hope Pym) is as the daughter of Hank Pym and Janet Van Dyne (aka The Wasp). Following the death of her father and mother, she became an antagonist of The Avengers alongside her twin brother, Henry Jr.
All of that is seemingly irrelevant, as it’s unlikely the Marvel Cinematic Universe will have Hope become Red Queen. Much of the early speculation is that she may end up being Wasp at some point. But seeing as Evangeline Lilly hasn’t even received a script for Ant-Man (as she stated at Comic-Con), it’s still hard to say.
