An iconic James Bond Villain will be recast in Bond 25.

Beyond Daniel Craig returning for Bond 25, there was another actor rumored to return. Christoph Waltz has said to the press before that he would consider playing the mastermind Blofeld for two more movies if Craig returned to the role. With Craig confirmed to be back, has Waltz decided to follow? That doesn’t seem to be the case.

In an interview with Italian film website Talky Movie, Christoph Waltz said he won’t be returning for Bond 25 as villain Blofeld because of tradition. That tradition maintains that Blofeld was played by a different actor in each of his appearances in the Bond franchise. Of course, Waltz could also be giving a misdirection since he was so coy with playing Blofeld in Spectre as well.

It is a shame that Waltz won’t be back because while his interpretation of the character wasn’t the greatest, there is no denying his talent. Spectre wasn’t a great Bond movie, but if given better development maybe the character of Blofeld could’ve flourished under the guidance of Waltz. He does seem to hint that Blofeld will be recast for the next film, not that the character won’t return.

It would make a lot of sense to bring the villain back, if for no other reason than Craig has stated that this will be his last appearance as the international super spy and a storyline like this would tie things up nicely. Bond 25 is currently scheduled for a November 2019 release so we will likely hear much more about casting soon. Whether or not Blofeld getting more ‘plastic surgery’ done to bring another actor into the role remains to be seen, but the team behind Bond 25 will likely pull out all the stops for its anniversary.
