Those of you who’ve been around the halls of Film School Rejects for a while might note that Bad Boys and its subsequent sequel Bad Boys 2 are among this journalist’s favorite action movies. In fact, it was Bad Boys that began my long-held affection for the cinematic works of director Michael Bay. It was also the movie that launched the cinematic career of Will Smith, who had previously been known as The Fresh Prince.
So it brings me much joy to report that Columbia Pictures has hired writer Peter Craig to begin work on a script for Bad Boys 3, a movie that would see the return of Marcus Burnett (Martin Lawrence) and Mike Lowrey (Will Smith), two fast-driving, gun-toting Miami narcotics cops with a penchant for standing still while a camera rotates around them in slow motion. It is also a project that could reunited director Michael Bay with producer Jerry Bruckheimer, a partnership I’ve long to see renewed, as Bay has done his best work under the guidance of Bruckheimer.
Peter Craig’s recent credits include co-writing The Town with Ben Affleck, which is shooting later this month, and writing the screenplay for the Cowboy Bebop movie to which Keanu Reeves is currently attached to star.
The project is a long way off, I know, but I can’t imagine a better step for Michael Bay. He is currently developing a smaller scale sci-fi film and could very well follow by going back to the Bad Boys universe. And I think we can all agree that no matter what you think of Bay, he’s been at his best with Bad Boys. Take for example the following chase scene:
