Blog of Thrones: The Death Index and Other Fun

By  · Published on May 27th, 2013

Well, that was a little awkward, was it not? Last night’s episode of Game of Thrones was far more glamorous than usual. The slightly more modern shift in setting, the sequins, the 15% increase in gay sex action. Also, the addition of Matt Damon to the cast is a real win for this series. It’s about time they started to pull in some bigger names, this is a cultural revolution, after all.

Wait, that can’t be right. What did I just watch? Ah yes, Game of Thrones was off this week to make way for the premiere of Behind The Candelabra, the film about Liberace and his man-friend. So while there will not be any episode to review, Blog of Thrones continues its march across the lands of Westeros. There’s always something to discuss. So lets start with this week’s most important question: Was Behind the Candelabra fabulous, or what?

Checking In On The Death Index

As you may remember from my first entry of season three, I asked a group of friends – non-book readers, all of them – to make some offhanded predictions as to how many episodes some of our favorite characters might last. Firstly, I’d like to thank all of you for not spoiling any of the deaths in the comments section. Thus far in season three of Blog of Thrones, we have not had any bloodshed. It’s a testament to the quality of people who read this column. Or a testament to the lack of people who read this column. It’s hard to say from week to week. Moving on, it’s time to check in on the predictions made by those four handsome devils. Here now is the updated Death Index with the already missed predictions greyed out and correct predictions in red:

Without looking very closely, it’s not hard to see that not one major character has died this year. It has me kicking myself that I didn’t add more interesting second-tier characters to the Index, such as Lord Mormont or Jaime Lannister’s sword hand. Who could have predicted that every single Lannister (including Joffrey!) would remain alive this long? Book readers, I suppose. The fact remains that while none of these major characters have met a grisly end yet, there are two more episodes left. And as we’ve seen with the formula that has worked so well for showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss in the past, episode 9 is traditionally where the most blood is spilt. In season one it was Ned Stark’s head rolling. In season two it was the battle of Blackwater Bay. Season three… well, we will know soon enough. And perhaps we’ll finally get to fill this Death Index with a little red.

The Game of Desks

“Do you guys watch Game of Thrones?” Yes Jimmy Fallon, we do:

The little touches in this Late Night Digital Original from Jimmy Fallon and Team is excellent, including but not limited to the opening title sequence. And the part where Jimmy Fallon dressed up as Daenerys Targaryen. Until next week, I call seat savesies on the Throne of Blogs…
