It was inevitable I guess. We used to get full trailers and artistic posters for upcoming movies, but those days are gone and have been replaced by teasers and amateur Photoshop retreads. And now the next target of over-zealous studio marketers appears to be the “clip.”
Typically a clip is an uninterrupted thirty to sixty seconds from a scene in the movie – an action beat, a setup and punchline or a big character moment – something to offer a taste of the film beyond a trailer edited to hit the sweet spots.
Marvel’s upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy is the studio’s biggest risk since the first Thor film in that its characters are a bit outside the typical superhero realm readily accepted by audiences. So yes, any marketing that reaches eyeballs is a good thing. But calling something a clip when it’s actually nothing more than a new teaser featuring a few seconds of new footage and a whole lot of what we’ve already seen? That’s just rude.

See? Nothing more than a few new seconds. A few fantastic, highly promising and super entertaining seconds. Peter Quill (Chris Pratt) aka Star Lord’s extended introduction to Korath the Pursuer (Djimon Hounsou) reveals a great escape gag with his jet boots which then leads into a sequence edited similarly to the full trailer. The film continues to look like an incredibly fun sci-fi adventure, and while I’ve never read the comics I appreciate the irreverence and ensemble nature of it.
Bigger than those few seconds though are a couple other revelations from yesterday. First up, director James Gunn is overseeing a handful of re-shoots for the film including a fight scene between Gamora (Zoe Saldana) and Nebula (Karen Gillan) that was previewed by Gillan herself via her Twitter. Less concrete but still interesting is Nathan Fillion’s comment at a Firefly convention in St. Louis (around the 38:00 mark in this video) that he may have gotten a small part in the film. Gunn himself hinted that the re-shoots could include a cameo or two so is it too much of a leap to imagine Captain Mal Reynolds (Fillion) showing up in some intergalactic bar scene?
