Captain Planet

Sony is close to securing the rights to make a Captain Planet movie because why the hell not? According to The Hollywood Reporter, Mark Gordon (2012), Don Murphy (Transformers) and Susan Montford (Splice) will be producing the adaptation of the nostalgia-stuffed 90s television show where teenagers imbued with special powers via Gaia-given rings tried to shut down polluters. Which, now that I think about it, Captain Planet wasn’t a huge presence on the program. He was more of a Day Glo Blue Ex Machina that descended whenever the kids failed (every episode). But regardless of how much he’s featured in the movie version, I think we can all agree on who should play him.

What is Movie News After Dark? It’s out right now. Please leave a message. We begin tonight with some new concept art for The Adventures of Tintin, courtesy of the folks over at Hey U Guys. It’s yet another look at the smooth animation behind this film from Steven Spielberg, who may appear again later in tonight’s edition of Movie News After Dark.

Since the entire planet will implode next year due to all the cars and cows butt-spitting noxious gases, and because of the overwhelming success of Avatar accredited to the presence of blue-skinned humanoids, Cartoon Network plans on making a live-action Captain Planet movie. The press release states that the network would be pairing with producer Don Murphy to make the film a reality. Amongst his credits are, of course, Natural Born Killers, Shoot ‘Em Up, and the Transformers franchise so a movie where a blue guy in a midriff-showing unitard flies around handing out magic rings to children sounds right up his alley. Of course, the elephant in the room is that this movie comes at a time where man-made global warming is still being discussed in the public square. Producer Susan Montford will also be working to bring the movie to theaters, and she had this to say: “With the earthquakes, tornadoes, melting icebergs and all the other problems threatening the world right now, Earth really needs her greatest defender.” Words fail. What actor will they convince to cover himself in body paint for the role? My vote is for Step By Step‘s Sasha Mitchell because 1) his awesome flat top 2) his fighting skills and 3) he was last relevant when Captain Planet was last relevant.

We all love seeing the Earth blow up in movies, even if it rarely happens. We’re in this fight together, and if we all pitch in just a little bit, we’ll be able to witness the complete death of our Earth many times during our lifetime.
