Your Alternate Box Office: ‘Woman of the Year,’ ‘Billy the Kid Versus Dracula,’ and ‘Anvil!’

By  · Published on May 13th, 2011

Whether you’re trying to avoid the releases this week or augment them with even more movies, Your Alternate Box Office offers some options for movies that would play perfectly alongside of (or instead of) the stuff studios are shoving into the megaplex this weekend.

This week features comedy wearing hot pink taffeta dresses, a vampire action film set in the Old West of the future, and the long-haired metal attitude of a bad ass who sets fire to everything.

Plus, if you see something you like, you can click on the image and buy it over at Amazon.

WOMAN OF THE YEAR (1942)

Double Feature With: BRIDESMAIDS

The Pitch: A lot has been made of the fact that a successful comedy featuring a female ensemble has been created (as if the world needed proof that women are funny). Yes, it’s fantastic to see it work so damned well, and it gives an opportunity to celebrate other funny woman on screen.

In Woman of the Year, Katharine Hepburn steps it up comically with a healthy dash of chemistry with Spencer Tracy while trying hard to make it to the altar. Women, weddings, and laughter. All good things.

BILLY THE KID VERSUS DRACULA (1966)

Watch Instead Of: PRIEST

The Pitch: First of all, Priest isn’t terrible. It’s just aggressively average. It’s a genre mash-up in the form of a Western/Horror/Sci-Fi/Action Film, and for that it should be applauded. It’s too bad the execution wasn’t better.

In the same vein, if you’ve never seen the low budget masterwork from director William “One Shot” Beaudine where Dracula attempts to make Billy The Kid’s fiance into a vampire bride, you owe it to yourself. The director’s nickname is One Shot! How could it be bad?

Sure, it’s schlocky and ridiculous, but it’s a hundred times more entertaining than the western horror flick hitting theaters this weekend.

ANVIL! THE STORY OF ANVIL (2008)

Double Feature With: HESHER

The Pitch: Metal! Nothing will match up quite as well as the complete freedom of Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s title character and the hardcore thrashing (and humanity) of Anvil! Also, on a simpler note, it gives us all another reason to watch Anvil! again.

Tremble at the sight of their awesome powers, mortal. Also feel free to tremble at the sight of a middle-aged naked man covering his junk with a Flying V.
