Everything is coming up Kate Winslet. After reporting that she will appear in the upcoming Avatar sequels, the first trailer for her Woody Allen film, Wonder Wheel, has dropped.

The film takes place in the 1950s on Coney Island. Kate Winslet’s character, Ginny, is a former actress who is seemingly contented with her life. When her husband’s estranged daughter (Juno Temple) arrives on the scene though, everything in Ginny’s life takes a wild turn. The cast is rounded out with Ginny’s husband Humpty (Jim Belushi) who is the Ferris wheel operator on Coney Island, while the lifeguard (Justin Timberlake) is someone Ginny is romantically entwined with.

The imagery of Wonder Wheel invokes the same feelings as Woody Allen’s other recent period pieces.  His films such as Midnight in Paris and Cafe Society also captured specific periods and Wonder Wheel certainly continues this trend. Hopefully where Wonder Wheel differs is that it becomes more than just an acting showcase for Winslet.

Amazon is also placing their eggs in the Woody Allen basket full-stop this time. Wonder Wheel is the first film Amazon will release themselves (previously their theatrical releases were handled by Roadside Attractions including last year’s Manchester by the Sea). Amazon has shown great support for Allen before with the critically derided Crisis in Six Parts series Allen created for the company. Wonder Wheel does have a prime unveiling setup as the closing night film of the NYFF.

Wonder Wheel opens December 1st, 2017.
