'Winchester: The House That Ghosts Built' Trailer: Helen Mirren in the World's Most Famous Haunted House

What demons live behind the doors of Winchester Mansion?

There have been plenty of haunted house movies in the history of film. It could be houses that were haunted by malicious spirits such as PoltergeistThe Haunting, or The Conjuring. There are few though that are based on legitimate haunted houses quite like Winchester: The House That Ghosts Built

Helen Mirren plays Sarah Winchester, the true heir to Winchester firearms company after her husband passed away. Sarah Winchester was known for a having a series of bad luck since there were numerous bizarre deaths within her family. According to Smithsonian magazine, Winchester visited a spiritualist in the mid-1800s, when plenty of sane Americans believed they could communicate with the dead, Winchester became terrified that her misfortunes, especially the death of her husband and one-month-old daughter, were cosmic retribution from all the spirits killed by Winchester rifles. Winchester was told that she would have to build a home and never stop adding to it, in order to appease the spirits.

Construction continued on the house until Winchester’s death in 1922 and that is a common theme in the trailer for Winchester: The House That Ghosts Built. Co-starring Jason Clarke and directed by Michael Spierig and Peter Spierig, Winchester: The House That Ghosts Built, shows that even though Winchester was trying to please the spirits, her massive mansion still remained quite haunted. From the looks of it, the movie will use the many winding passages and numerous ghosts to get a scare behind every closed door.

Here is the synopsis for the film:

Inspired by true events. On an isolated stretch of land 50 miles outside of San Francisco sits the most haunted house in the world. Built by Sarah Winchester, (Academy Award®-winner Helen Mirren) heiress to the Winchester fortune, it is a house that knows no end. Constructed in an incessant twenty-four hour a day, seven day a week mania for decades, it stands seven stories tall and contains hundreds of rooms. To the outsider it looks like a monstrous monument to a disturbed woman’s madness. But Sarah is not building for herself, for her niece (Sarah Snook) or for the brilliant Doctor Eric Price (Jason Clarke) whom she has summoned to the house. She is building a prison, an asylum for hundreds of vengeful ghosts, and the most terrifying among them have a score to settle with the Winchesters…

Winchester: The House That Ghosts Built will hit theaters February 2nd, 2018.
