What’s New to Stream on Shudder for September 2018

Revenge

Streaming services are all the rage, and while the big three (Netflix, Amazon Prime, Hulu) remain the power trio dozens of more specifically curated sites have popped up to cover more particular film interests. One of the best, especially for horror and genre fans, is Shudder. The service opened its virtual doors in 2015 and hasn’t slowed down since. Each month sees their roster of titles shift and grow as classics new and old, forgotten gems, and more are added.

The complete list of new movies hitting Shudder this month — September 2018 — is below, but first I want to highlight a few titles worth seeking out.

Shudder Pick of the Month

A woman is assaulted by her boyfriend’s friend, but rather than defend her the man she loves runs her off a cliff. He’s disposing of a problem, protecting his marriage, and choosing bros over a smart, capable, and sexually confident woman. Big mistake. Huge! Revenge (premieres on 9/13) pairs its simple title and exploitation-ready premise with a refreshing eye courtesy of director Coralie Fargeat, gorgeous cinematography from Robrecht Heyvaert, a kick-ass lead performance by Matilda Lutz, a pulse-pounding score from Rob (no relation), and raging torrents of blood. It’s a thrilling blend of terror and action all unfolding beneath a bright desert sun.

Boo!

Found footage films, including faux-documentaries made from them, are more often than not repetitive, dull, and obnoxious affairs. There are dozens of great ones, though, a not-so small minority made possible by the sheer volume of films, and one worth seeking out is 2015’s Hell House LLC. The film is a doc about a slaughter that occurred in a “haunted house” consisting of footage obtained from the people setting up the event. It’s legit chilling and creepy at times, and now a sequel is premiering on Shudder that I’ll absolutely be tuning into starting on the 20th. Hell House LLC II: The Abaddon Hotel continues the story in some way, and while I’m avoiding the trailer I’m hoping it delivers more thrills, chills, and bloody spills.

The Best “Trilogy” Ever Made

It may not be an official trilogy, but Park Chan-wook’s brilliant, thrilling, and tonally confident threesome of violent films tackles the theme of revenge from all angles, and all three hit Shudder on 9/10. Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance is the most somber of the bunch offering a grim kick to the gut, and Oldboy ups the style and action while still landing a heart-crushing ending. My favorite of the three, though, is Lady Vengeance. It’s a work of pure beauty even as violence leaps off the screen, and while it has arguably the “happiest” ending it’s still a weighty affair as all the pieces fall into place. The films aren’t connected in any tangible way, and while a couple performers crossover they’re as wholly different characters, but the shared themes and sheer brilliance of the productions creates a powerful “trilogy” that once seen will never be forgotten.
