Some people spend their days arguing over the merits of Netflix and how it’s “killing cinema” as we know it, but the rest of us know better. It’s just one more way to re-watch the movies we already love and find new ones to cherish. This month sees plenty of both hitting the service.

The complete list of movies and shows hitting Netflix this month — November 2018 — is below, but first I’m going to highlight a few that stand apart from the bunch.

Netflix Pick of the Month

Cam (11/16) feels like the unlikely mash-up of Irwin Winkler’s The Net (1995) and David J. Schow’s short story “Red Light” — if you haven’t read Schow’s award-winning tale do so soon, but you can skip The Net if you’ve somehow managed to do so before now. The shared conceit is that the more we put ourselves out there the less of us remains. It puts traditional concerns of identity and paranoia in a modern setting, and it’s all the more harrowing for it. Madeline Brewer gets a standout role here too after shining on the periphery of shows like Orange Is the New Black and The Handmaid’s Tale. Give it a watch, and maybe re-think your own time spent online.

So Many Originals, So Little Time

May The Devil Take You

Another month, another several original films produced or acquired by Netflix! A young upstart named Orson Welles headlines November with the long-awaited restoration and release of The Other Side of the Wind. A true historical tale comes to life with David Mackenzie’s Outlaw King (11/9). After rocking the online world with The Night Comes for Us, director Timo Tjahjanto returns with the supernatural scream-fest May the Devil Take You (11/15). The Coen Brothers go west with The Ballad of Buster Scruggs (11/16). And finally, The World Is Yours (11/30) offers up a nimble little crime caper.

The Oldest Movie Coming to Netflix

Close Encounters

One of the complaints lobbed against Netflix over the years is that their collection of older films is minimal at best. There’s truth to it, of course, as their library consists of 82% original content, 46% movies from the last two decades, and 2% films produced prior to the year 2000. We’re here to celebrate the positive, and to that end we’re going to highlight the oldest feature film hitting the service in November. This month’s relic is no slouch either! Steven Spielberg’s Close Encounters of the Third Kind (1977) might not have been the obvious choice after making a splash with Jaws (1975), but it’s a still-mesmerizing film about humanity’s meeting with extraterrestrials. Humor, drama, thrills, and awe collide.

It’s a Netflix Xmas!

Christmas Chronicles
Netflix

Netflix Originals come in all shapes and sizes, and one of their more popular niches has become the holiday film. This year’s big one looks to be The Christmas Chronicles (11/22) starring Kurt Russell as Santa Claus trying to save Christmas with the help of two adorable rugrats. It’s not alone, though, as there are plenty of presents to open this year. An Advent calendar tells the future in The Holiday Calendar. It’s a holiday-themed Prince and the Pauper with The Princess Switch (11/16). And finally, last year’s surprise streaming hit — admit it, you watched it — gets a sequel with A Christmas Prince: The Royal Wedding (11/30).
