Hulu has been stuck in the third place position when it comes to movie streaming behind Netflix and Amazon Prime because most people still see them strictly as a home for next-day television. They have movies too, though, and more than a few of them are terrific gems that make Hulu a destination beyond last night’s TV shows.
The complete list of new movies hitting Hulu this month — November 2018 — is below, but I wanted to highlight the best of the bunch along with several others worth seeking out.
Hulu Pick of the Month
The Department Q trilogy lands on 11/16 and offers a chilly trio of Nordic thrillers about a police unit investigating cold cases. The films — A Conspiracy of Faith, The Absent One, and The Keeper of Lost Causes — were released from 2013 through 2016 and offer some grim mysteries involving murder, abuse, and more. They’re not poppy thrillers and instead find grisly truths in the darkest parts of humanity. Enjoy!
Halloween May Be Over But Our Love of Horror Movies Continues!
The Faculty (1998) is a fun genre romp that feels every bit a time capsule of the 90s, and it remains one of Robert Rodriguez’s best (despite the unfortunate cameo by Harry Knowles). Elijah Wood, Josh Hartnett, Jordana Brewster, and more young faces face off against their alien teachers delivering laughs and gore along the way. Hulu continues their year-long series with Blumhouse delivering one new horror/thriller a month, and November’s Into The Dark installment is Flesh & Blood. It’s pretty good! And finally, the month’s end brings something new to me in the form of Daylight’s End (2016) which premieres on 11/30. It’s a post-apocalyptic tale of viruses, mutated creatures, and survival, and while I don’t know if it’s any good I do know it stars Lance Henriksen which means I’ll be giving it a shot.
80s Action!
First up are a pair of Charles Bronson gems! 10 to Midnight (1983) is a and creepy slice of exploitation as Bronson tracks a serial killer, and Death Wish 3 (1985) is the absolute opposite as it turns a once serious franchise into pure action ridiculousness. Next up is ninjas with a one-two punch of Revenge of the Ninja (1983) and Ninja III: The Domination (1984). So many ninjas! Chuck Norris shoots, kicks, and blows up hundreds of bad guys in Invasion U.S.A. (1985) and Missing in Action II: The Beginning (1985). And finally, while Jackie Chan’s Supercop (1992) came the decade later it’s an absolute masterpiece, and I can’t just ignore its arrival this month.
Ben Affleck Was the Bomb in Phantoms!
For real though, Dean Koontz’s novel is a stone-cold horror classic and worth seeking out, but if you’re looking to check out the sketchy adaptation this is your chance! Phantoms (1998) turns the story into another Dimension Films “horror” flick focused on twenty-somethings, and while it’s not great there’s still fun to be had with it. Some solid action and creature effects make it an entertaining time.
