Editor’s Note: Warning, this article contains information about the final 20 minutes of last Sunday’s Lost finale. That means spoilers. If you haven’t seen it and you read on anyway, we have no sympathy for you. Otherwise, enjoy.
One of the most interesting things about the final moments of Sunday’s Lost finale was a brief interlude between the characters of Hurley (Jorge Garcia) and Ben (Michael Emerson). I’m speaking, of course, of Hurley saying “you were always a good number two.” As any astute viewer could figure out, this did not mean that Ben was always a piece of shit, despite some evidence to the contrary. What he was referring to was the fact that after the death of Jack Shepard in the real world, Hurley was left to care for the island with Ben as his number two man. There was no indication as to how long their reign over mystery island lasted, nor was there anything said about how it ended, but we can assume that it was interesting. Remember The Island, that was the interesting part about Lost to begin with. The writers may have forgotten, but I hadn’t.
Anyway, the folks at G4 talked with Michael Emerson this week about a special feature on the forthcoming complete series DVD release (due out in August). It’s an epilogue that shows a little bit of what life on The Island was like under the reign of Hugo. It’s easily the best possible spin-off idea to come from the finale, aside from seeing what happens to crazy Claire once she returns to civilization. Alas, here is what Emerson had to say about this mysterious epilogue:
“For those people that want to pony up and buy the complete Lost series, there is a bonus feature, which is…you could call it an epilogue,” explained Emerson. “A lost scene. It’s a lot. It’s 12 or 14 minutes that opens a window onto that gap of unknown time between Hurley becoming number one and the end of the series. It’s self-contained, although it’s a rich period in the show’s mythology that ‘s never been explored, so who knows what will come of it.”
